
Infinity edge and vanishing edge pools create the breathtaking illusion of water merging seamlessly into the horizon or ocean vistas. Yet achieving an unbroken, glass-smooth laminar water sheet cascading quietly over the crest requires far more than aesthetic vision: it demands sub-millimeter weir leveling, dynamic surge flow management, and rigorous surge balance tank hydraulic engineering.
Knife-edge weir geometry and sub-millimeter leveling tolerances (±1 mm)
In vanishing edge pools, the primary failure mode is elevation inaccuracy along the weir crest. Even a minuscule 2-millimeter deviation causes water to rush heavily over the lower point while leaving the higher end dry, completely destroying the infinity optical illusion.
Achieving sub-millimeter precision with traditional masonry coping tiles is notoriously difficult. Modern engineering relies on SNY Pool's custom-fabricated AISI 316 Stainless Steel Knife-Edge Weir Profiles. Calculating surge balance tank volume: Bather displacement, wave surge, and drain-back
In infinity pools, whenever the booster pump shuts down, water standing in the crest sheet and catchment gutter drains back into the surge tank. If the surge tank is undersized, starting the pump empties the tank, starving the pump into destructive cavitation; conversely, when multiple bathers plunge in, displaced water overflows the tank and drains wastefully to sewer.
Engineering sizing formula: Total Surge Volume V_total = V_bather + V_wave + V_weir_sheet + V_safety. Where V_bather = Max bathers × 0.075 m³ (average human displacement); V_weir_sheet = Weir length × Operational weir crest thickness (approx. 10 mm) × Surface dynamics; V_wave = Bather surge & wind action (3-5% of total pool surface area); V_safety = Minimum 1.0 m³ drowned suction head over pump intakes. For a 50 m² luxury villa pool with a 10-meter vanishing weir, an effective surge tank capacity of at least 6 to 8 m³ is mandatory.
Cascade flow rate (m³/h per linear metre) and multi-point suction balance
To generate a continuous, glass-smooth water sheet over the infinity drop, the required flow coefficient ranges from 3.0 to 6.0 m³/h per linear metre of weir width (e.g. 30 to 60 m³/h for a 10-metre edge). Under-pumping causes the water film to cling irregularly to the wall face; over-pumping creates excessive turbulent splash-out from the lower catchment trough.
To prevent air-locking and acoustic surging as water drains by gravity from the lower catch trough to the surge tank, oversized Ø110 mm or Ø125 mm multi-point stainless floor drains must be piped with a continuous 2% gradient.
