
Pool waterfalls and stainless steel water curtains are more than aesthetic centrepieces in modern architecture; they provide a therapeutic hydro-massage and tranquil spa ambience. However, achieving a continuous, glass-smooth (laminar) sheet of water hinges entirely on correct hydraulic engineering: precise flow rate calculation, proper pipe diameter sizing, and pump head capacity.
How to calculate required flow rate (m³/h) by waterfall width
To achieve an unbroken, glass-like laminar water sheet, the core engineering rule of thumb is supplying roughly 10 to 15 m³/h of water flow per linear metre of nozzle width. For instance, a 300 mm (30 cm) recessed wall waterfall requires around 3.5 – 4.5 m³/h, while a 500 mm Cobra or Lux style waterfall demands 8 – 12 m³/h for a rich, full cascade. For a wide 1000 mm (1 metre) water curtain, the ideal flow rate spans 15 – 18 m³/h.
Insufficient flow causes the water sheet to narrow, tear in the center, and break into irregular trickles. Conversely, excessive flow produces uncontrolled splashing, harsh turbulence, and unwanted water spray around the poolside deck.
Dedicated booster pump vs. filtration bypass system?
In many residential projects, builders attempt to tap the waterfall line into the main filtration pump using a three-way bypass valve to cut costs. However, this causes two critical issues: first, running the waterfall starves the pool's main inlet nozzles, disrupting total water circulation. Second, as the sand filter collects dirt and head loss rises, the waterfall's flow visibly drops over time.
In professional pool engineering, waterfalls and water curtains should always be powered by a dedicated booster pump with its own suction intake (ideally dual anti-vortex side suction grilles). Using at least Ø63 mm or Ø75 mm PVC pipe on the suction line prevents pump cavitation, and the feature is best switched independently via poolside pneumatic or piezo touch buttons.
AISI 304 vs. AISI 316 in outdoor and saltwater conditions
Pool waterfalls are continuously exposed to water mist, chloramine gases, and intense solar UV. In coastal regions such as the Aegean and Mediterranean (Bodrum, Cesme, Antalya), ambient marine salt combined with saltwater chlorinators demands AISI 316 marine-grade stainless steel with 2-3% molybdenum to completely prevent pitting corrosion and tea-staining.

Key technical details for waterfall installation
The most critical installation factor is leveling the mounting flange with millimeter precision. Even a slight tilt causes water to pool to one side, completely ruining the sheet symmetry. Additionally, a spring check valve should be installed on the supply line to prevent water from back-siphoning into the pump room when turned off.
In regions with sub-zero winter temperatures, always include a draincock in the plant room to evacuate standing water from the waterfall body and pipework before freezing occurs.
